Milford A. “Pete” Buchanan, formerly of Millheim, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Juniper Village in State College. He was 96. Born September 15, 1927, in Clearfield, Pete was a son of the late Marlin and Dorthea “Peters” Buchanan. When he was very young, Pete’s father passed away and Dorthea married Pete’s stepfather, Fred Cochrane who raised him. He was a graduate of Clearfield High School and then attended Lock Haven University where he attained his Bachelor’s Degree in education. Finally, he received his Master’s Degree in education from Penn State University. On December 20, 1957, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Millheim, Pete married Nancy Guisewite who survives.
Pete served our country during World War II in the United States Marine Corps. He was employed as a Mathematics Teacher at Penns Valley Area High School, retiring with 36 years of service. During his teaching career, Pete was inducted into the Penns Valley Wrestling Hall of Fame as a coach. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the American Legion Post #444, both in Millheim, and he was a past Master of the Old Fort Masonic Lodge #537 in Centre Hall. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, golfing and skiing. He also served the community as an EMT with the ambulance association.
In addition to his wife, Pete is survived by two sons, Steven Buchanan (Carmen) of TX and Charles Buchanan (Mindy) of MD; one sister, Joan Turner (Peck) of WV and four grandchildren, Evan Buchanan of CA, Alex Buchanan of TX, Benjamin Buchanan of TX and Lexi Jo Buchanan of MD. Pete was preceded in death by one sister, Rosemary Nix.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 10-11:30 am at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Mill Street in Millheim. The Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:30 am with Pastor Becky Horn officiating. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Pete be given to the Parkinson’s Foundation at www.parkinson.org.
